- Your Favorite Weapon (2001) is the debut full-length album by Long Island-based band Brand New. The album consists largely of power chord-heavy pop-punk songs, detailing the highs and lows of teenage relationships and experiences. As of 2009, the band has begun to perform some tracks from this release more frequently, such as "The Shower Scene"; "Jude Law and a Semester Abroad"; "Mixtape"; "The No Seatbelt Song"; "Seventy Times 7" and "Soco Amaretto Lime". The song title "Seventy Times 7" in Your Favorite Weapon comes from a verse in the Holy Bible - Matthew 18:22 - where Jesus tells Peter he must forgive his brother "seventy times seven times" - "Then Peter came and said to him, "Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how oft should I forgive? As many as seven times?" Jesus said to him, "Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy times seven times.". The song is about a disagreement between Jesse Lacey and childhood friend John Nolan, then-guitarist in Taking Back Sunday. Taking Back Sunday later released "There's No 'I' in Team," which is their side of the story. Lacey and Nolan are now on good terms again and are well past the issue. A line in "The Shower Scene" (which itself is a reference to Alfred Hitchcock's film Psycho) which reads "It's time for you to choose / The bullet or the chapstick" is an allusion to a speech by Malcolm X entitled "The Ballot or the Bullet". In August 2002, Iodine Recordings released Your Favorite Weapon on vinyl along with an extra track, "... My Nine Rides Shotgun", a song from the band's early days. This is also available as a bonus track on the Japanese release of the album. This vinyl pressing was done on blue vinyl, and is exceedingly rare. The few copies that do surface online tend to fetch prices near $200. The band also stated on numerous occasions that they weren't entirely happy with the recordings of the songs, and in 2002, re-recorded "Jude Law and a Semester Abroad" and released it for free on MP3. com. The album was finally released in the UK on March 17, 2003, by Eat Sleep Records, followed shortly by the single "Jude Law and a Semester Abroad", released on CD and 7" vinyl, two and a half months later on June 2, 2003. "Jude Law and a Semester Abroad" had also previously been made into a music video, helping the band gain many fans across the world. On February 9, 2004, Your Favorite Weapon finally made its way to Australia, being released on Below Par Records.

Fue grabado en 2001 en los estudios del productor Mike Sapone y lanzado el 9 de octubre de ese mismo año por Triple Crown Records en formato CD y por Iodine Recordings, que se encargó del formato en LP. Este primer trabajo de la banda de Long Island tiene un sonido punk pop y la temática de las letras son las propias de una banda adolescente que acaban de salir del instituto y que apenas superan la veintena. Relaciones frustradas, amores no correspondidos y demás experiencias adolescentes. El disco dio un single, "Jude Law and a Semester Abroad", que rápidamente entró con cierto éxito en los canales de música alternativa MTV2 y Fuse. Uno de los puntos más calientes de Your Favorite Weapon es la canción "Seventy Times 7", cuyo título (Setenta veces siete) proviene de la Biblia, en concreto del evangelio de San Mateo, Mt 18, 21-35 en el que dice: Se acercó Pedro y le preguntó a Jesús: "Señor, ¿cuántas veces tendré que perdonar a mi hermano las ofensas que me haga? ¿Hasta siete veces?". ¿Por qué poner límites?, la caridad, el amor no tiene limites. Siete es un número indefinido. Jesús le respondió: "No te digo hasta siete veces, sino hasta setenta veces siete”. El fondo de la canción esta dedicado al incidente que Jesse Lacey tuvo con John Nolan, guitarrista, vocalista y uno de los líderes de Taking Back Sunday junto a Adam Lazzara y que provocó la salida de Lacey de esta banda. Al parecer, Nolan, compañero de Lacey en Taking Back Sunday y en el instituto, se habría acostado con la novia de Lacey en aquel momento y ambos tuvieron problemas personales entre ellos, lo que provocó que ambos no se dirijieran la palabra en dos años. En respuesta a esta canción, TBS compuso "There Is No 'I' in Team", que se incluye en el álbum debut Tell All Your Friends. Afortunadamente ambos se reconciliaron e incluso llegaron a cantar a dueto en algunos conciertos estas polémicas canciones. En agosto de 2002, el sello independiente de Boston, Massachusetts, Iodine Recordings lanza el álbum en formato vinilo e incluye un tema extra, "... My Nine Rides Shotgun", que aparece también en la edición japonesa del disco. Your Favorite Weapon tardó en llegar a los diversos puntos del mundo. Incluso en el siempre influente Reino Unido en la música, vio como el álbum no llegó hasta dos años después de su lanzamiento. Eat Sleep Records lo lanzó el 17 de marzo de 2003 y en Australia se lanzó el 9 de febrero de 2004 mediante Below Par Records, cuando ya estaba Deja Entendu, segundo álbum, en las calles.
