As a general rule of thumb, anything north of 86th street between York ave and lexington, up to 96th street is considered Yorkville and not the Upper East side. Many realtors and business owners like to refer to this area as the upper east side but it is a staunch diiference for the neighborhood just south of 86th street. Its western half was referred to as "Irishtown. " The neighborhood's main artery, East 86th Street, was sometimes called the "German Broadway. " Its ZIP codes are 10021, 10028, 10075 and 10128. Yorkville is advocated for by Manhattan Community Board 8.

Ces habitants provenaient au départ d'une partie plus au sud de Manhattan, vers Tompkins Square Park, que l'on appelait au début du XX siècle Little Germany. En 1904 eut lieu la catastrophe du General Slocum, un navire de plaisance affrêté par l'église luthérienne de Saint Mark pour un gigantesque pique-nique à Long Island. Il sombra dans l'East River et 1031 personnes périrent, dont beaucoup venaient du quartier. Ce drame connut des suites mouvementées et toute la communauté en fut profondément affectée. Nombre d'habitants décidèrent de quitter le quartier, où s'étaient accumulés rancœur et désespoir, et pour certains difficultés financières. Quelques-uns choisirent de s'établir au New Jersey mais la plupart ne firent qu'un voyage de quelques kilomètres vers le haut de Manhattan, dans ce qui était au départ le village de Yorkville. Comme à la suite de cette tragédie, les tavernes et autres lieux de réjouissance avaient fermé dans l'ancienne Little Germany, ils rouvrirent à Yorkville et la communauté reprit vie à cet endroit. Il reste aujourd'hui quelques témoignages de ce passé germanique, dont le marchand de saucisses Schaller & Weber. Dans les églises, on y célèbre encore des messes en allemand, hongrois, tchèque ou slovaque. Le quartier s'est pourtant depuis beaucoup uniformisé, sans style particulier, depuis qu'une population assez huppée l'a occupé. Yorkville est le quartier de la célèbre université Rockefeller et des annexes new-yorkaises de l'université Cornell.
