Xinu ("Xinu Is Not Unix", a recursive acronym) is a Unix-like operating system originally developed by Douglas Comer for instructional purposes at Purdue University in the 1980s. It has been ported to many hardware platforms, including the DEC LSI-11 and VAX systems, Sun-2 and Sun-3 workstations, Intel x86, PowerPC G3 and MIPS.

Xinu wurde neben Minix vor allem an Hochschulen und Universitäten in der Informatik zur Lehrzwecken verwendet und zeichnete sich durch die Reduktion auf das absolut Notwendige durch Kompaktheit und Übersichtlichkeit aus. Es reichte in der Regel ein halber Tag aus um das System und die Abläufe darin zu verstehen. Dieses Betriebssystem ist heute so gut wie ausgestorben. Es war für 16 Bit-Systeme geschaffen und durch den Anteil an Assemblercode nie wirklich auf 32 Bit portiert worden. Auch die Verbreitung von Linux und der dadurch verfügbare Quellcode bieten einen umfassenderen, wenn auch nicht so kompakten Einblick. Das größte Manko an Xinu war, dass man nichts Ernsthaftes damit anfangen konnte.
