Pontius spent a year doing research working with partner and Academy of Science classmate Liam Wallace. The team, working with students from Singapore's Hwa Chong Institution, developed a nanomesh composed of poly(ethylene oxide) and sodium alginate to create an "artificial leaf" in conjunction with the use of Cyanobacteria. This technology in a system that was 50% more efficient at oxygen generation than natural Spinach leaves that could potentially be applied to oxygenate the atmosphere on Mars.
