The story, a contemporary version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, is set in New York City and focuses on writer Alice Cornwinkle, a descendent of Alice Liddell, and her daughter Chloe, who falls through a Central Park portal to Wonderland, which is in danger of disappearing. In order to rescue her daughter and help preserve the magical land, Alice must defeat the evil Queen of Hearts. The musical, directed by Gregory Boyd, is scheduled to begin previews on November 24, 2009 and open on December 5 at Ferguson Hall in the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in Tampa, Florida, where it is set to run through January 3, 2010. The production is budgeted at $3 million. The production will then transfer to the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas, where an opening is scheduled for January 9. It is hoped the production will then transfer to Broadway or play a national tour. Wildhorn and Murphy previously have collaborated on The Civil War, Waiting For The Moon, The Count of Monte Cristo, and the upcoming musical Havana, and have written songs for Linda Eder. Boyd has directed productions of Wildhorn's Svengali (for which he penned the lyrics), Jekyll & Hyde, and The Civil War (for which he contributed lyrics and dialogue with Murphy).
