V roce 2005 se k ní hlásilo přes 398 000 věřících. Je v současnosti třetí největší luterskou církví v USA. Kromě USA působí církev ve 24 zemích světa. Sídlem církve je od jejího založení město Milwaukee. Synoda provozuje čtyři teologické školy. Církev učí, že Bible je inspirované a neomylné Slovo Boží, přikládá velkou váhu luterským symbolickým knihám, zastává kreacionismus, odmítá ordinaci žen, zavrhuje jakýkoli mimomanželský pohlavní styk jako hřích. Díky misii Wisconsinské evangelické luterské synody byla v České republice založena dosud neregistrovaná Česká evangelická luteránská církev, která působí v západních Čechách.
