На роль крайних нападающих отбирают ребят с бойцовским характером, с повышенной агрессивностью. Самым важным для нападающего является искусство владения шайбой. За игру крайний нападающим приходиться бегать по несколько километров, а лучшим до 10 км. Лучшими крайними нападающими в истории хоккея являются — Валерий Харламов, Сергей Макаров, Александр Овечкин, Илья Ковальчук и многие другие.
