La partie utilisateur: Elle est constituée d'une première machine virtuelle dite système. Le sous-système Win 16 bits se charge en premier auquel s'ajoute le sous-système Win 32 bits. Quand une application MS-DOS est lancé une nouvelle machine virtuelle est créée. Elle se base sur le noyau DOS système. Microsoft commercializzava parallelamente i sistemi operativi della famiglia Windows NT, che erano totalmente a 32 bit ed erano basati su un kernel completamente diverso e molto più stabile, ma che richiedevano potenze di calcolo troppo elevate per i computer degli anni 90. Solo nel 2001 l'arrivo di Windows XP, appartenente alla famiglia NT, ha permesso di abbandonare il kernel di Windows 9x anche per i computer di fascia più bassa, che ormai disponevano di una potenza di calcolo più che sufficiente.
