Trousdale was a protege of Andrew Jackson, having served under him in the Creek War and acquiring the nickname, "The War Horse of Sumner County" in that conflict. He was a Democrat. He was a brigadier general in the Mexican War. While he was governor, the Southern Convention of 1850 was held at the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville. This marked probably the first time that secession was openly and seriously discussed in the South.
