William Chomsky (1896-1977) was an American scholar of Hebrew, born in Ukraine, who was a professor at Gratz College. He was made faculty president of Gratz in 1932, a position that he held for thirty seven years. He also taught at Dropsie College, a graduate school of Jewish and Semitic studies. from 1955 until 1977. He was a renowned specialist of the history of the Hebrew grammatical tradition, before and after David Kimhi (1160–1235).

His obituary (New York Times, 22 July 1977) describes him as "one of the world's foremost Hebrew grammarians. " He was married to Elsie Simonofsky; they had two sons, Noam and David. His son Noam Chomsky is the well-known American linguist and intellectual.

Er arbeitete zunächst in sweatshops und dann als Lehrer an jüdischen Grundschulen in Baltimore während er an der Johns Hopkins University studierte. Mit seiner Frau Elsie Simonofsky verzog er nach Philadelphia und beide unterrichteten an der Religionsschule der Mikveh Israel Congregation. 1924 wurde er in die Fakultät des Gratz College aufgenommen, deren Präsident er von 1932–1955 war. Bis 1969 blieb er an diesem College für jüdische Studien. Ab 1955 arbeitete er zudem bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1977 am Dropsie College, dem Zentrum für erweiterte jüdische Studien (CAJS, Center for Advanced Judaic Studies) der University of Pennsylvania. Chomsky galt als Spezialist für hebräische Grammatik. Als seinen Idealtext bezeichnete er einmal den Talmud, dessen „parallele Geschichten, lange diskursive Fußnoten und Hauptkommentare und, den Text kommentierenden Text“, er schätzte. Er ist der Vater von David Eli und Noam Chomsky.
