William James Durant (5 November 1885 – 7 November 1981) was a prolific American writer, historian, and philosopher. He is best known for the 11-volume The Story of Civilization, written in collaboration with his wife Ariel and published between 1935 and 1975. Il rentre pourtant au séminaire en 1909, dont il devient rapidement le libraire, mais le quitte en 1911 avec 40 dollars US et de grandes idées. Il devient alors professeur dans une école expérimentale de Manhattan et y rencontre sa future femme Ariel, qu'il épouse en 1913. L’Histoire de la philosophie est publiée en 1921 et il s'en vend deux millions de copies en quelques années grâce à un article favorable vendu dans le New York Times. La rédaction de l’Histoire de la civilisation commence en 1929 et remportera le prix Pulitzer pour son dixième volume. Plus de 17 millions de copies de ses livres ont aujourd'hui été vendues à travers le monde. Will Durant s’est battu pour l’égalité salariale entre les sexes, le droit de vote des femmes et pour de meilleur conditions de travail des salariés américains. Ne se contentant pas simplement d’écrire sur de nombreux sujets, il a également mis ses idées en pratique, avec pour objectif de rendre la philosophie accessible pour tous. Il a œuvré pour la compréhension mutuelle entre culture et entre individus.
