Crossing the R. wichurana originally growing in East Asia with the Japanese R. rugosa he was able to create the R. kordesii which was able to survive even in the harsh climate of Northern Germany. Other cultivars such as Dortmund and Heidelberg have been developed from the Rosa kordesii. His sons Wilhelm Kordes II (1891-1976) and Hermann continued to expand the rosarium which is know as "W. Kordes’ Söhne".
