Wildspitze is the highest mountain in the Ötztal Alps and the second highest mountain in Austria after the Großglockner. The large number of glaciers and relatively easy routes make it popular with ice climbers (especially the North face). The first ascent of the southern peak was accomplished in 1848 by Leander Klotz and an unknown farmer of the region. The even higher northern peak was also first climbed by Leander Klotz. The most taken route to the top is from the Breslauer Hütte.

The main part of the climbers sleep at the hut and go further to the summit the next day. From the Breslauerhütte it is 4,5h walking/climbing to the summit. An alternative route goes from the Braunschweigerhütte in the Pitztaler glacier area. From the hut you take the route over the glaciers to the Mittelbergjoch and further over the Tasachferner (glacier with a lot of crevasses in this area) to the summit of the Wildspitze. The average time used for this tour is 6,5h. The lookout from the peak is only limited by the curvature of the earth. To the east one can see as far as the Schobergruppe and the Bernese Alps to the west.

De meest gevolgde route leidt vanuit het daldorp Vent langs de Breslauer Hütte (2844 m) met een kleine gezekerde passage naar Mitterkarjoch (3468 m). Vanaf deze pas kan via de Taschachferner de rotsige zuidtop via de graat worden beklommen. Als alternatief kan met behulp van een klimuitrusting ook de 50° stijgende noordelijke bergtop worden beklommen. Men moet voor de topbeklimming vanaf de Breslauer Hütte ongeveer 4 à 4,5 uur rekenen. Een andere aanlooproute loopt via de Braunschweigerhütte (2755 m), gelegen in het Pitztaler gletsjerskigebied. Vanaf hier volgt men een route richting het zuiden naar het Mittelbergjoch. Vanaf het Mittelbergjoch een zuid-oostelijke koers aanhouden om zo de top te beklimmen. Vanaf de Braunschweigerhütte heeft men ongeveer 6,5 uur nodig om de Wildspitze te bedwingen.
