Although the words in the guide have been based on the same official rules as the Green Booklet, the spellings in the two booklets do not always match. To aid users, the differences between the White Booklet and Green Booklet are made clear by appending GB to the differently spelled words.

Deze uitgave was bedoeld als correctie op het Groene Boekje van 1995, dat bekendstond om zijn vele slordigheden en zijn onvolledigheid in de regels. De Spellingwijzer volgde het Spellingbesluit van 1996 (en dus de officiële regels) maar paste die regels soms anders toe, wat tot een vrij groot aantal verschillen in de woordenlijst leidde. Over die verschillen meldt de Spellingwijzer in het ‘Ten geleide’: “Ten behoeve van de gebruikers die zich aan de officiële spelvormen in het Groene Boekje willen of moeten houden, is met de aanduiding GB aangegeven waar wordt afgeweken van spelvormen in het Groene Boekje. ”
