- A whistleblower is a person who alleges concealed misconduct on the part of an organization or body of people, usually from within that same organization. This misconduct may be classified in many ways; for example, a violation of a law, rule, regulation and/or a direct threat to public interest, such as fraud, health/safety violations, and corruption. Whistleblowers may make their allegations internally (for example, to other people within the accused organization) or externally (to law enforcement agencies, to the media or to groups concerned with the issues). Whistleblowers frequently face reprisal - sometimes at the hands of the organization or group which they have accused, sometimes from related organizations, and sometimes under law. Some noted whistleblowers include: Jeffrey Wigand, who exposed the Big Tobacco scandal, revealing that executives of the companies knew that cigarettes were addictive and approved the addition of carcinogenic ingredients to the cigarettes. Wigand's story was the basis for the 1999 movie The Insider. Robert MacLean, who disclosed that the FAMS planned to remove air marshals from long haul flights in order to avoid the cost of an overnight hotel stay. Dr. David Graham, who discovered that the pain-reliever Vioxx increased the risk of cardiovascular problems, spoke out against the policies of the Food and Drug Administration, and succeeded in convincing the FDA to require large warning labels on Vioxx packaging. Rick S. Piltz, who worked with the U.S. Climate Change Science Program and blew the whistle on Philip Cooney, a White House official who edited a climate change report to reflect the administration's views without having any scientific background. Dr. Frederic Whitehurst, who exposed irregularities at the USA's Federal Bureau of Investigation's Crime Lab. Paul van Buitenen, who exposed irregularities in the European Commission.
- Hinweisgeber oder Whistleblower (abgeleitet vom Englischen "to blow the whistle"; in Anlehnung an einen Schiedsrichter auf einem Sportfeld, der auf falsches sportliches Verhalten hinweist) ist jemand, der Missstände, illegales Handeln oder allgemeine Gefahren, von denen er an seinem Arbeitsplatz erfährt, an die Öffentlichkeit bringt.
- Whistleblower (doslova ten, kdo hvízdá na píšťalku) – v češtině též bubeníček, píšťalka, hluboké hrdlo, je mediálně angažovaný a vůbec veřejně (většinou tedy nejen před zaměstnanci vlastní firmy) pokřikující zaměstnanec problémové firmy, instituce nebo organizace; většinou bývalý nebo k odchodu se chystající zaměstnanec nebo člen firmy, který odhalí a zveřejní nebo oznámí nepřijatelné chování zaměstnanců své firmy (členů své organizace) – zpravidla skrze média nebo subjektům, které mají moc, příležitost nebo schopnost přijmout nebo iniciovat nápravné opatření – např. úřadům; pejorativně udavač, donašeč nebo práskač. Za obecně nepřijatelné, nesprávné či kontroverzní firemní chování a praktiky se má protiprávní jednání nebo porušení firemních, místních nebo obecně platných předpisů, norem či pravidel - včetně norem slušného chování - nebo přímé ohrožení veřejného zájmu či bezpečnosti; podvod, ohrožení zdraví a bezpečnosti, porušení státního tajemství, korupce nebo sexuální harašení na pracovišti jsou nemnohými příklady takového chování. Jako bubeníček proslul v USA například Jeffrey Wigand díky odhalení velkého tabákového skandálu. Prokázal, že manažeři společnosti věděli, že cigarety jsou návykové, a souhlasili s přidáváním karcinogenních a jinak škodlivých přísad do tabáku. V roce 2009 se proslavil bývalý překladatel FBI - whistleblower Sibel Edmonds, který zveřejnil hrůzostrašný příběh zkaženosti na nejvyšší Washingtonské úrovni - prodej nukleárních a dalších státních a strategických tajemství (tomu, „kdo dá víc“), krytí osob podezřelých z terorismu, ilegální transfer zbraní, nezákonné obchodování s narkotiky, praní špinavých peněz, neopodstatněné nebo jen zájmům špinavých kšeftů sloužící špehování, korupce a mnoho jiného. Bubeníčkem se nejčastěji stávají zaměstnanci obchodních firem nebo vládních agentur a různí veřejně působící aktivisté. Bubeníčkem není profesionální nebo pravidelný informátor nebo publicista (pokud neinformuje o poměrech ve vlastní agentuře či redakci). Bubeníčkem nebyl občan potají hlásící StB, že jiný občan se neztotožňuje s hodnotami socialistického zřízení, ani občan, který Bushově administrativě hlásil, že soused vyrábějící si domácí pyrotechniku by mohl mít teroristické smýšlení. Obecně je ale hranice mezi bubeníčkem a udavačem velmi nejistá až zrádná. Fenoménem v této oblasti ze od svého založení roku 2006 stal server Wikileaks. Server funguje na wiki principu a slouzí k anonymnímu a bezpečnému zveřejňování citlivých dokumentů, ať už pocházejících z vládních agentur, obchodních společností, nebo různých církví.

À la différence du délateur, le lanceur d'alerte n'est pas dans une logique d'accusation visant quelqu'un en particulier. En langue française, la notion a été longtemps mêlée à celle de dénonciateur voire de délateur. Au Québec et au Canada francophone, effectivement, le terme de dénonciateur est encore celui qui est le plus souvent employé pour traduire le mot anglais whistleblower (bien que le terme lanceur d'alerte ait été reconnu en 2006 dans la fiche dénonciation du Grand Dictionnaire terminologique de l'Office québécois de la langue française. Le terme récent, lanceur d'alerte, a été inventé par les sociologues Francis Chateauraynaud et Didier Torny; il a notamment été popularisé par le chercheur André Cicolella, lui-même un « lanceur d'alerte ». Au cours des vingt dernières années, en France, plusieurs personnes ayant lancé de telles alertes ont été menacées ou poursuivies par leur employeur ou d'autres acteurs, cela a incité des mouvements associatifs ou politiques à demander la mise en place d'une législation afin de protéger les lanceurs d'alerte, en s'inspirant du droit existant dans différents pays, dont les États-Unis, sur cette problématique. Le Grenelle de l'environnement, en 2007, a proposé une protection juridique des lanceurs d'alerte. Le gouvernement fédéral du Canada s'est doté d'une Loi sur la protection des fonctionnaires divulgateurs d'actes répréhensibles qui a été modifiée en 2007. Les lanceurs d'alerte eux-mêmes s'appuyant également sur le travail complémentaire effectué en amont et en aval par les sentinelles de veille - terme récent inventé par Sophie Renault - qui elles-mêmes, à un degré moindre, ont à supporter des pressions et autres agissements par leurs employeurs ou autres acteurs.
- 内部告発（ないぶこくはつ）とは、組織（企業）内の人間が、所属組織の不正や悪事（法令違反など）を、監督機関（監督官庁など）や報道機関へ通報することである。 俗にチクリともいわれる。これは主に児童・生徒が多用する言葉であり、この場合はしばしば善悪の立場が逆（和を乱した）の意味合いにもなる。勇気を出して悪を告発した内部告発者が激しい報復に晒されることもあるなどこの言葉が表すものは重い。 組織の不祥事は、この内部告発によって明らかになるケースが多い。
- Een klokkenluider bedient het luiden van de (kerk)klokken door aan het klokkentouw te trekken. Het luiden van de klokken was vroeger een belangrijke taak omdat klokken het enige middel voor massacommunicatie waren. Niet alleen werden de kerkelijke diensten tijdig door gewijde klokken aangekondigd, het luiden van de stadsklokken kon het sluiten van stadspoorten aankondigen, oproepen tot raadsvergaderingen, maar ook waarschuwen voor zaken als onheil en brand. Raadsbesluiten en gerechtelijke uitspraken werden genoteerd in het luidboek van de banklok en waren pas rechtsgeldig als zij overluid waren door deze klok. Het nieuws galmde dus over de streek. Vandaar de uitdrukking iets "aan de grote klok hangen". Hoewel het merendeel van de klokken tegenwoordig van een luidmotor is voorzien, wordt met name in Friesland nog op uitgebreide schaal met de hand geluid. Zo worden ook de klokken in de Domtoren van Utrecht ononderbroken sinds de middeleeuwen nog altijd met de hand geluid.
- Whistleblower (z ang. „gwizdkowy, dmuchający w gwizdek”) - ten, który bije na alarm lub zdradza spisek. Jest to termin znany i stosowany w Anglii, USA, Kanadzie, Australii, Nowej Zelandii, Afryce Południowej. Whistleblower bierze na siebie uwrażliwienie opinii publicznej na malwersacje, akty korupcji, czy pogwałcenia prawa w jednostkach budżetowych i urzędach administracji państwowej, w których pracuje. Chodzi tu o zjawisko specyficznego donosicielstwa. Polega ono na tym, że określeni pracownicy informują osoby odpowiedzialne za sprawy etyczne i dyscyplinarne o nieuczciwości, nierzetelności lub złamaniu kodeksu etycznego czy prawa przez innych pracowników. Wiąże się to z mobbingiem, dlatego że osoby te (nazywane czasem sygnalistami), mają problemy w swoim środowisku pracy, są nierzadko prześladowane, poniżane przez współpracowników. Na Zachodzie zwłaszcza w Stanach Zjednoczonych i w Australii, istnieją instytucje, które chronią takie osoby. W USA jest to organizacja, która nazywa się National Whistleblower Center. Instytucja ta działa we wszystkich stanach i zajmuje się lobbingiem w celu ochrony osób informujących na przykład o fakcie korupcji. W 2002 roku, za działalność tego rodzaju, tygodnik Time przyznał tytuł Człowieka Roku pracownicom FBI, Worldcomu i Enronu.

Straff kan vara att åtalas för förtal eller - om beskyllningen är riktad mot den egna arbetsgivaren - att bli avskedad eller omplacerad.
