When We Were Kings is a 1996 documentary film directed by Leon Gast about the famous Rumble in the Jungle heavyweight championship match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman held in (what was then called) Zaire (now called the DR Congo; all references are to Zaire) on October 30, 1974. Il regista Leon Gast, attraverso interviste e filmati d'archivio, ricostruisce la carriera di Alì-Cassius Clay, il suo incredibile carisma e la battaglia per i diritti civili soprattutto in favore degli afroamericani. Alì, nelle settimane che precedono l'incontro più difficile della sua carriera, si fa portavoce e simbolo del riscatto culturale e morale dell'intero popolo zairese, affrontando una sfida difficilissima (da alcuni definita impossibile) con un pugile più potente e più giovane di lui. George Foreman, anche se a sua volta nero, nell'immaginario del popolo zairese diventa da subito il nemico da battere, il simbolo della sopraffazione di un popolo ("Alì, boma ye" - "Alì uccidilo", è il grido di incitamento del pubblico di Kinshasa). Emerge da questo film un ritratto sincero e umano, ma nello stesso tempo leggendario ed entusiasmante di un atleta che trascende il semplice significato sportivo.
