Then upon its creation in 1989, he became the main presenter for Central News South in Abingdon, Oxfordshire alongside Anne Dawson and latterly, Hannah Shellswell. His partnership with Anne Dawson was the longest partnership together on any ITV Regional News programme up until her departure in 2002. Central News South was the programme for which Smith became most famous and ended up gaining the nickname 'Mr Central South'. He continued to present for the news service for 18 years until it was closed in December 2006, when ITV merged this region with the adjoining Meridian West news region to form the ITV Thames Valley news region. As well as his work for Central News and Thames Valley Tonight, Smith has presented special programmes from the RAF International Air Tattoo for Central & Westcountry Television and has directed live news bulletins. He also appeared as a newsreader in The Remorseful Day, the final episode of Inspector Morse in 2000.
