Der Ort gilt als Ausgangspunkt für Ausflüge in die Dörfer Ost-Sumbas. Rund drei Kilometer östlich der Stadt liegt Prailiu, ein Dorf bekannt als Zentrum der Ikat-Webkunst. Ikat-Tücher haben in Ost-Sumba verschiedene Funktionen - sie können den sozialen Status des Trägers ausdrücken, sie können aber auch - beispielsweise wenn sie benutzt werden, um einen Leichnam einzuhüllen - Teil eines sakralen Ritus sein.

Bouraq (kantoor bij de veerboothaven)heeft een aantal keren per week een dienst op Denpasar en op Kupang. Waingapu heeft twee havens, één in het centrum en één een paar km buiten de stad. In het centrum vertrekt 1 x per week de ASDP veerboot naar Ende op Soembawa en 1 x per week de boot naar Savoe. Vanuit de buitenhaven wordt een aantal keren per maand een verbinding onderhouden met Kupang, Ende en ook met Soerabaja en Semarang.
