Visual effects (commonly shortened to Visual F/X or VFX) are the various processes by which imagery is created and/or manipulated outside the context of a live action shoot. Visual effects often involve the integration of live-action footage and computer generated imagery (CGI) in order to create environments which look realistic, but would be dangerous, costly, or simply impossible to capture on film.

  • Visuaalinen tehoste (kutsutaan myös joskus nimellä visuaalinen erikoistehoste) on elokuvan jälkityöstövaiheessa, nykyisin yleensä tietokoneella toteutettu erikoistehoste. Kyseessä saattaa olla kokonaan tietokoneella luotu kuvamateriaali tai kameralla kuvattu materiaali, joka tietokoneella käsitellään tai yhdistetään muihin kuviin. Elokuvatuotannossa erikoistehosteryhmä ei nykyään enää ole vastuussa visuaalisista tehosteista vaan visuaalisia tehosteita tehnyt ryhmä mainitaan erikseen visuaaliset tehosteet otsikon alla. Ryhmän vastuuhenkilöä kutsutaan nimellä Visual effects supervisor. Suomenkielistä vastinetta termille ei tällä hetkellä ole käytössä. Visuaalisia tehosteita kutsuttiin ennen optisiksi tehosteiksi.
  • VFX（ブイエフエックス、視覚効果）とは、Visual Effects（ビジュアル・エフェクツ）の略で、映画や特撮ドラマで現実には見ることのできない画面効果を実現するための技術のことを指す。 撮影現場での効果をSFX（Special Effects、特殊効果）と呼ぶのに対し、撮影後のポスプロ段階に付け加えられる効果をVFX（視覚効果）と呼ぶ。 "FX"のつづりは、SFXと同様に英語で発音したとき"effects"に類似、もしくは全く同じ発音になることから。 アメリカのアカデミー賞にはアカデミー視覚効果賞とアカデミー科学技術賞がある。
