In March 2006 Visma was the subject of a takeover bid by The Sage Group, which was countered by a higher offer from Engel Holding AS, a subsidiary of the private equity company HgCapital. On May 11 2006, Engel Holding declared, that the offer was accepted as 96.3% of the shares were offered to the company. On 24 August 2006 the company which had the ticker symbol VIS was delisted from the Oslo Stock Exchange.

Selskapet ble dannet som et resultat av sammenslåingen av selskapene Multisoft, SpecTec og Dovre Informasjonssystemer i 1996, og har siden da kjøpt opp flere selskaper over hele Norden og Nord-Europa. Samlet omsetning var 3 milliarder norske kroner i 2008 og antall medarbeidere 3 400. Selskapet har 210 000 kunder. Visma har siden juni 2009 hatt hovedkontor på Skøyen i Oslo. Det nye bygget som kalles Sjølyst Arken er tegnet av Niels Torp Arkitekter AS, og ligger 75 meter fra Skøyen stasjon.
