Some authorities intend the sleeping knight to represent the Roman general Scipio Africanus (236 - 184 BC) who was dreaming to choose between Virtue (behind whom is a steep and rocky path) and Pleasure (in looser robes). However, the two feminine figures are not presented as contestants. They may represent the ideal attributes of the knight: the book, sword and flower which they hold suggest the ideals of scholar, soldier and lover which a knight should combine.

La Virtus è la donna in costumi abbastanza castigati con in mano la spada e il libro, simbolo di vita attiva e contemplativa, mentre la Voluptas, in abiti deliziosamente fluttuanti, è simbolo dei piaceri terreni. In questo quadro, però, c'è un invito a seguire i principi della filosofia neoplatonica, che implica l'armonizzazione delle due inclinazioni.

Waarschijnlijk vormde het schilderij een paar met het paneel De drie gratiën, wat nu in het kasteel van Chantilly hangt. Het thema van het schilderij is controversieel, sommige autoriteiten zeggen dat Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus maior afgebeeld is op het doek die droomt tussen het kiezen van Deugd (degene bij het rotsachtig pad) of Plezier (in lossere gewaden). Echter zijn de twee vrouwelijke figuren niet gepresenteerd als concurrenten. Ze kunnen ook de ideale attributen van een ridder vertegenwoordigen. Het boek, zwaard en bloem die ze vasthoudt kan ook suggereren dat ze de idealen van een geleerde, soldaat en geliefde vertegenwoordigen.
