Bei den Briten wurde die Siedlung Fort Sackville genannt. Der Aufstand 1778 wurde durch Soldaten niedergeschlagen, die aus Detroit entsendet wurden. Die Siedlung wurde durch George Rogers Clark am 23. Februar zurückgewonnen. Die Ereignisse dieser Zeit werden in dem 1901 erschienenen Roman Alice of Old Vincennes von Maurice Thompson beschrieben. In Vincennes befindet sich die Vincennes University und Grouseland, der Wohnsitz von US-Präsident William Henry Harrison zwischen 1803 und 1812.
