Ce groupe de San Francisco fut très populaire fin des années 70 - début des années 80 pour ses prestations quasi-obscènes combinée à des satires des médias, de la société de consommations et de la politique. Quand Brent Mydland décède d'une overdose le 26 juillet 1990, il le remplace aux claviers et aux chants dans le groupe Grateful Dead. Il est resté dans le groupe jusqu'à la dissolution du groupe en août 1995 après la mort de Jerry Garcia. Il poursuit une carrière solo et au sein des Ratdog, du Missing Man Formation, de Phil Lesh and Friends, du Mickey Hart Band, de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Il se suicide le 2 juin 2006.

Na de dood van Brent Mydland, keyboardspeler van Grateful Dead, aan een overdosis, werd Welnick de nieuwse toetsenist. Welnick was een vriend van zanger Jerry Garcia. Welnick bleef toetsenist tot de dood van Garcia in 1995 (waarna de groep uit elkaar ging). Tijdens de laatste tournee van de band (in de lente en vroege zomer van 1995) leed Welnick aan een longziekte, hoewel dit toentertijd uit de media werd gehouden. Op 2 juni 2006 werd Welnick dood gevonden in zijn huis in Forestville bij San Francisco. Eerst werd meegedeeld dat hij gewond zou zijn aangetroffen en later in het ziekenhuis zou zijn overleden, maar enkele dagen later werd bekendgemaakt dat hij in zijn huis zelfmoord had gepleegd. Hij was na de dood van Garcia depressief geworden. Vince Welnick is 55 jaar oud geworden.
