Im Gegensatz zu den Hauptstädten der baltischen Nachbarländer Lettland und Estland, Riga und Tallinn, gelang es dem Deutschen Orden im Mittelalter nicht, Vilnius einzunehmen. Die Stadt geht im Gegensatz zu den beiden anderen baltischen Metropolen auch nicht auf eine mittelalterliche deutsche Siedlung zurück, sondern war als Hauptstadt Litauens das administrative Zentrum eines ausgedehnten Großreiches, das auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Macht zeitweise von der Ostsee bis zum Schwarzen Meer reichte. Vilnius galt seit seiner Gründung als eine der liberalsten Städte Europas, die im Lauf ihrer Geschichte auch verfolgten Juden aus Mitteleuropa und Russland Schutz vor Verfolgung bot. Als „Jerusalem des Nordens” wurde Vilnius zu einem Zentrum der jüdischen Kultur und Aufklärung. Im Holocaust verlor die Stadt fast sämtliche jüdischen Bewohner und somit die Hälfte ihrer Bevölkerung. Ab dem 16. Jahrhundert schufen italienische Baumeister zahlreiche Bauwerke im Stil des Barock, und noch heute verfügt Vilnius über eine der ausgedehntesten Altstädte in Osteuropa, die von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt wurde. Im 20. Jahrhundert war das Gebiet von Vilnius aufgrund seiner ethnischen Zusammensetzung umstritten und wurde nach einem Referendum im Jahr 1920 von Polen annektiert und erst 1939 an Litauen zurückgegeben.

La périphérie de la ville, par contre, ne brille pas par ses qualités architecturales. Elle conserve l'empreinte des tours d'habitation de béton gris de l'époque soviétique et est par conséquent assez mal intégrée au paysage verdoyant des campagnes environnantes. Néanmoins, il existe toujours des maisons traditionnelles entre deux barres. Basses et en bois, elles gardent souvent leur aspect originel par faute de moyens de leur propriétaire.
