Jahrhundert schufen italienische Baumeister zahlreiche Bauwerke im Stil des Barock, und noch heute verfügt Vilnius über eine der ausgedehntesten Altstädte in Osteuropa, die von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt wurde Im 20. Jahrhundert war das Gebiet von Vilnius aufgrund seiner ethnischen Zusammensetzung umstritten und wurde nach einem Referendum im Jahr 1920 von Polen annektiert und erst 1939 an Litauen zurückgegeben. Aufgrund der über 50 Kirchen der Stadt trägt Vilnius auch den Beinamen „Rom des Ostens“. Man sieht von fast jedem Ort aus in der Stadt mindestens vier Kirchtürme.

En témoigne cet aspect de « ville chantier » (certes moins poussé que la proche Varsovie que certains surnomment le Hong Kong de l'Europe Centrale) avec plusieurs buildings de verre et d'acier en construction et qui tranchent par leur modernité sur les antiques trolleybus qui desservent toujours la ville. La périphérie de la ville, par contre, ne brille pas par ses qualités architecturales. Elle conserve l'empreinte des tours d'habitation de béton gris de l'époque soviétique et est par conséquent assez mal intégrée au paysage verdoyant des campagnes environnantes. Néanmoins, il existe toujours des maisons traditionnelles entre deux barres. Basses et en bois, elles gardent souvent leur aspect originel par faute de moyens de leur propriétaire.
