Od II w. n.e. rozpowszechnia się również taoizm i coraz popularniejszy staje się buddyzm. Ostateczne uniezależnienie od Chin nastąpiło w 938 r. W XIX Wietnam popadł w zależność kolonialną od Francji. W XX w. Wietnamczycy prowadzili walki narodowowyzwoleńcze z Francuzami, a w latach 1964 - 1973 ze Stanami Zjednoczonymi.
