- The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a national war memorial in Washington, D.C. It honors members of the U.S. armed forces who fought in the Vietnam War and who died in service or are still unaccounted for. Its construction and related issues have been the source of controversies, some of which have resulted in additions to the memorial complex. The memorial currently consists of three separate parts: the Three Soldiers statue, the Vietnam Women's Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, which is the best-known part of the memorial. The memorial was inspired by the 1971 establishment of the Vietnam Veterans Peace and Brotherhood Chapel in Angel Fire, New Mexico, which was begun by the parents of Marine First Lieutenant David Westphall, who was among thirteen men in his unit killed in an ambush in Vietnam in 1968. The main part of the memorial, which was completed in 1982, is in Constitution Gardens adjacent to the National Mall, just northeast of the Lincoln Memorial. The memorial is maintained by the U.S. National Park Service, and receives around 3 million visitors each year. The Memorial Wall was designed by U.S. landscape architect Maya Lin. The typesetting was performed by Datalantic in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2007, it was ranked tenth on the "List of America's Favorite Architecture" by the American Institute of Architects.

Un compromis fut trouvé en commissionnant Frederick Hart (qui avait fini 3e de la compétition originale) pour réaliser une sculpture figurative dans la tradition héroïque, en complément au mur du mémorial. La statue et le mur semble interagir, les soldats regardant avec solennité vers le mur où sont inscrits le nom de leurs camarades. La distance entre les deux autorise cette interaction tout en minimisant l'impact de cet ajout sur le design de l'œuvre de Lin. Le Vietnam Women's Memorial Le mémorial est géré et entretenu par le National Park Service et reçoit environ 3 millions de visiteurs chaque année.

La parete, di granito nero lucidato, è composta da due pareti trapezoidali allo scopo di trasmettere al visitatore l'intensificarsi del numero dei caduti con il procedere degli eventi bellici; dunque sulla base minore è disposto il nome del primo caduto e la relativa data di morte. Procendo, il muro aumenta la sua altezza da terra cosi come il numero di morti, fino alla massima altezza, posta in corrispondenza alla intersezioni delle due ali. Il muro è suddiviso in pannelli, uno per ciascun anno.

Het meest herkenbare van deze drie delen is "de muur", een uit twee delen opgetrokken muur van zwart graniet, elk deel is 75 m lang en tussen de 20 cm en 3 m hoog en onder een hoek van ongeveer 125 graden verbonden met het andere deel. Het ene deel van de muur wijst in de richting van het Washington Monument terwijl het andere naar het Lincoln Memorial wijst. Op de muur staan zo'n 58.000 namen van gesneuvelde en vermiste soldaten die tijdens de Vietnamoorlog in dienst waren. De muur werd ontworpen door de architect Maya Lin. De muur werd in 1982 onthuld. Het vrouwenmonument werd in 1993 aan het complex toegevoegd terwijl in 1984 al een standbeeld werd onthuld met de naam The Three soldiers. Jedna ze ścian wychodzi na pomnik Jerzego Waszyngtona, druga - na pomnik Abrahama Lincolna. Wzdłuż ścian znajduje się ścieżka dla zwiedzających. Memorial Wall został zaprojektowany przez 21-letnią studentkę architektury z Yale University, Maya Ling Lin, która zwyciężyła w narodowym konkursie na projekt pomnika. 6 maja 1981 jury złożone z architektów i rzeźbiarzy jednogłośnie wybrało projekt Lin spośród 1421 prac. Położenie kamienia węgielnego miało miejsce 26 marca 1982 roku, a otwarcie 13 listopada 1982 roku, po przemarszu tysięcy weteranów wojny wietnamskiej. W projekcie brakuje wielu elementów typowych dla tradycyjnych pomników wojennych, jak patriotyczne inskrypcje, postacie bohaterów (chociaż statua The Three Soldiers została dodana do kompleksu w 1984 roku, a Vietnam Women's Memorial w 1993 roku, w pewnej mierze na skutek niezadowolenia niektórych osób z pierwotnego projektu). Nazwiska są wymienione w kolejności dat śmierci żołnierzy, bez informacji o stopniu wojskowym, jednostce i odznaczeniach. Pomnik otaczały z początku kontrowersje - niektórzy weterani utrzymywali, że jest niestosowny i niewystarczająco patriotyczny. Jednak z czasem pomnik stał się jednym z najchętniej odwiedzanych miejsc w Waszyngtonie.
