The Pineios River flows southeast of the town and empties into the Ionian Sea south of the centre, and a bridge was under repairs in 1997 for lane expansion. Distance is 4 km W of Gastouni, 4 km S of Dimitra, 14 km SE of Kyllini, 10 km E of Kyllini Baths, 34 km NW of Pyrgos, 74 km W of Patras. The closest beaches are founded southwest.

  • Vartholomio ist eine Gemeinde auf der Kyllini-Halbinsel im Osten der Halbinsel Peloponnes am rechten Unterlauf des Flusses Pinios, der jenseits der östlichen Gemeindegrenze ins Ionische Meer mündet. Die Nachbargemeinden sind nördlich Kastro-Kyllini, nordöstlich Andravida und Gastouni im Osten. Der Ort trug ursprünglich die Namen Valtochori (Βαλτοχώρι, „Sumpfdorf“) und Vatrachochori (Βατραχοχώρι, „Froschdorf“), ein Hinweis auf die Sümpfe im Pinios-Tal. Der heutige Name soll auf einen Ritter der von 1204 bis 1430 herrschenden Franken namens Bartholomé oder Barthélémy II. Guise zurückgehen, gräzisiert zunächst als Vartholomeo (Βαρθολομαίο). Während der Griechischen Revolution war Vartholomio am 10. November 1825 Schauplatz einer Schlacht der in die Festung Chlemoutsi geflohenen griechischen Bevölkerung gegen die Truppen des ägyptischen Generals Ibrahim Pascha, der die Gegend eroberte und für einige Jahre grausam beherrschte. Erst nach der Schlacht von Navarino 1827 wurde auch Vartholomio endgültig befreit und Teil des neu gegründeten Griechenland. 1988 lag bei Vartholomio das Epizentrum eines schweren Erdbebens. Vartoholomio verfügt über einige schöne Strände, so den von Thines und den an der Grenze zu Kastro-Kyllini gelegenen Strand von Arkoudi. Ein Naherholungsziel ist der Pinienwald von Thines. Das 2000 gegründete städtische Volkskundemuseum versammelt Zeugnisse und Erinnerungsstücke aus der Geschichte der Gemeinde wie Trachten, Interieurs und Werkzeuge. Zu besichtigen ist ferner ein Kloster der Heiligen Eleousa. Vartholomio gliedert sich in die Ortsteile Vartholomio (Verwaltungssitz), 3.714 Einwohner Dimitra (Δήμητρα), 307 Einwohner Kalyvia (Καλύβια), 159 Einwohner Lygia (Λυγιά), 698 Einwohner Machos (Μάχος), 470 Einwohner
