- Count Valerian Aleksandrovich Zubov was a young Russian general who led the Persian Expedition of 1796. His siblings included Platon Zubov and Olga Zherebtsova. As a young man Zubov had flattering prospects of a brilliant military career due to his brother Platon's ascendancy at Catherine II's court. He was reputed by contemporaries as "the handsomest man in Russia". The legend has it that the aged Empress flirted with him, secretly from his brother. During her reign he was much lionized as a military hero of incredible valor. He was appointed General-Major and sent to assist Suvorov in quelling the Kościuszko Uprising in Poland, where he was said to treat both the Polish noblemen and their wives brazenly and "in the most lowly manner". During this stay in Poland, he married Teodor Lubomirski's granddaughter and lost his leg in a toy battle. Several months before Catherine's death, 24-year-old Valerian was invited to take charge of the army heading for Persia. Of this chimerical venture, engineered by both Zubov brothers and aiming at the conquest of all Asia up to Tibet, there came nothing good. Valerian managed little beyond taking Derbent and was recalled to Russia in disgrace. Zubov's return from his luckless expedition occasioned a superb ode by Derzhavin, meditating on the fleeting nature of fortune and success. This is his chief claim to fame.

Il était déjà lieutenant-général en 1794. Pendant sa carrière, il est adulé en tant qu'héros militaire d'une incroyable bravoure. Il est nommé Général en chef et est envoyé en Pologne pour combattre les rebelles, où il est dit qu'il traite effrontément les nobles polonais et leurs femmes de la plus pauvre des manières. Durant son séjour en Pologne, il se marie avec la comtesse Potocka et perdit une jambe durant une bataille emportée par un boulet. Catherine lui envoya son propre chirurgien avec le cordon de Saint-André, cent mille roubles, et le grade de général en chef. Peu de temps après elle lui donna le commandement de l'année qu'elle envoya contre la Perse. Il avait alors 24 ans. Appelé l'expédition perse de 1796, cette expédition chimérique, organisé certains diront manigancé par les deux frères Zoubov, a pour but la conquête de toute l'Asie jusqu'au Tibet, mais ce projet fût un échec. Valérien réussit à prendre peu de territoires au-delà de Derbent; mais il ne put obtenir d'autres succès, et fut même battu auprès de cette ville; enfin ses troupes eurent également à souffrir de l'insalubrité du climat et de l'incapacité du général. Elles étaient depuis longtemps inactives sur les bords du Cyrus lorsque Zoubov reçut la nouvelle de la mort de Catherine, et l'ordre de revenir en Russie. Son retour, cependant, a permis la création d'une ode magnifique du poète Derjavine, méditant sur la nature fluctuante et fugitive de la fortune et du succès. Craignant avec raison d'être destitué, il demanda sa retraite, et se rendit en Courlande, où il était propriétaire de la plupart des biens des anciens ducs. Revenu à Saint-Pétersbourg après l'avènement d'Alexandre, il mourut dans cette ville le 4 juillet 1804.
