- Ut Unum Sint is the incipit of an encyclical by Pope John Paul II of May 25 1995. Encyclicals are referred to by their "incipit" or first few words. The words are from the prayer of Jesus in the Gospel according to John it deals with the Roman Catholic Church's relations with the Orthodox Church and other Christian ecclesial communities. This document reiterated that unity of these two sui juris churches is essential, as well as further dialogue and unity with the Protestant churches. This document shows that the Roman Catholic Church is officially moved to unity. It has become a common piece of study in ecumenical classes. In paragraph 54, we find the oft-quoted sentence: "In this perspective an expression which I have frequently employed finds its deepest meaning: the Church must breathe with her two lungs!" In paragraph 79, we see five subjects that are considered important for "more clear" understanding that will bring unity: The relationship between Sacred Scripture, as the highest authority in matters of faith, and Sacred Tradition, as indispensable to the interpretation of the Word of God; The Eucharist, as the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ, an offering of praise to the Father, the sacrificial memorial and Real Presence of Christ and the sanctifying outpouring of the Holy Spirit; Ordination, as a Sacrament, to the threefold ministry of the episcopate, presbyterate and diaconate; The Magisterium of the Church, entrusted to the Pope and the Bishops in communion with him, understood as a responsibility and an authority exercised in the name of Christ for teaching and safeguarding the faith; The Virgin Mary, as Mother of God and Icon of the Church, the spiritual Mother who intercedes for Christ's disciples and for all humanity.

Zamýšlí se nad příčinami rozdělení a následném schizmatu a hledá cesty k jeho překonání. Před vydáním encykliky proběhlo mnoho ekumenických setkání na všech úrovních života církve, teologický dialog mezi katolickou a protestantskou částí a došlo k znovuobjevením společných svědků víry, která potvrdily a prohloubily společenství s dalšími křesťany, společenství, které do jisté míry sice existuje, ale ne v plnosti. Církev nepovažuje jiné (nekatolické) křesťany za vzdálené nebo dokonce cizince, ale vidí v nich své bratry a sestry. Výraz „odloučení bratři“ je nahrazován slovy „další křesťané“ nebo „jiní pokřtění“. Papež ovšem trvá na jisté výlučnosti katolické církve a na trvalé a nezměnitelné hodnotě dogmat. Papežská služba je nejkontroverznějším tématem ekumenického dialogu a encyklika jí věnuje zvýšenou pozornost, vybízí k hledání způsobu vykonávání primátu, který by byl přijatelný pro všechny křesťany.

- Ut Unum Sint (Qu'ils soient un) est une encyclique du pape Jean-Paul II publiée le 25 mai 1995. Suivant la prière de Jésus dans l'Évangile selon Jean, l'encyclique traite des relations de l'Église catholique avec l'Église orthodoxe et les autres communautés chrétiennes. Ce document réaffirme que l'unité des deux Églises sui juris est essentielle, tout comme le dialogue avec les églises protestantes. - Ut unum sint (łac. Aby byli jedno) - ogłoszona 25 maja 1995 roku encyklika Jana Pawła II (dwunasta z kolei). Jest kolejną encykliką w historii papiestwa, która traktuje sprawę ekumenizmu. Spotkała się z dość powszechnym uznaniem wśród różnorodnych odłamów chrześcijańskich: luteranizmu, anglikanizmu, starokatolicyzmu oraz prawosławia. Była też krytykowana, jako sprzeczna z dotychczasową nauką Kościoła. Zostało w niej podkreślone że kościół zmierza w stronę jedności. W paragrafie 54 znalazło się stwierdzenie:"W tej perspektywie jeszcze pełniejszego uzasadnienia nabiera wyrażenie, którym posłużyłem się wiele razy: Kościół musi oddychać obydwoma płucami!W pierwszym tysiącleciu historii chrześcijaństwa wyrażenie to odnosiło się nade wszystko do dwoistości Bizancjum — Rzym; od Chrztu Rusi jego znaczenie się rozszerza: ewangelizacja zatacza szersze kręgi i coraz rozleglejsze obszary, tak że ogarnia cały Kościół. Jeśli się zważy ponadto, że to zbawcze wydarzenie nad brzegami Dniepru nastąpiło w czasie, kiedy Kościół na Wschodzie i na Zachodzie pozostawał nie podzielony, można łatwo zrozumieć, że do pełnej komunii należy dążyć w perspektywie jedności, która nie usuwa uprawnionej różnorodności. Podkreśliłem to stanowczo w Encyklice Slavorum apostoli, poświęconej świętym Cyrylowi i Metodemu" By osiągnąć pełną zgodność wiary wskazane zostało pogłębianie następujących zagadnień: "1. relacje między Pismem Świętym, najwyższym autorytetem w sprawach wiary a świętą Tradycją — nieodzowną interpretacją słowa Bożego; 2. Eucharystia, sakrament Ciała i Krwi Chrystusa, ofiara uwielbienia składana Ojcu, pamiątka ofiary i rzeczywista obecność Chrystusa, uświęcające wylanie Ducha Świętego; 3. Święcenia — pojmowane jako sakrament — do potrójnej posługi episkopatu, prezbiteratu i diakonatu; 4. Magisterium Kościoła, powierzone Papieżowi i Biskupom w komunii z nim, rozumiane jako sprawowana w imię Chrystusa władza i odpowiedzialność za nauczanie i zachowanie wiary; 5. Maryja Dziewica, Matka Boża i Ikona Kościoła, duchowa Matka, która wstawia się za uczniów Chrystusa i całą ludzkość."
