Urban and peri-urban horticulture (UPH) includes all horticultural crops grown for human consumption and ornamental use within and in the immediate surroundings of cities. Although crops have always been grown inside the city, the practice is expanding and gaining more attention. The products of UPH include a large variety of vegetables, cereals, flowers, ornamental trees, aromatic vegetables and mushrooms.

Generally, the types of crops cultivated vary according to the area, influenced by culture and tradition. In cities, short-cycle crops are preferred, while in the surroundings of the city crops with longer cycles are cultivated, for example in orchards. In summary urban horticulture is defined as the production, functional use and impact of horticultural crops under urban conditions.
  • Der Urbane Gartenbau mit seinen spezifischen Problemen gewinnt aufgrund der rasanten Urbanisierung sowie der damit assoziierten Probleme weltweit zunehmend an Bedeutung. Als noch relativ junges Wissenschaftsgebiet definiert sich das Arbeitsgebiet in der folgenden Weise: „Unter dem Urbanen Gartenbau wird die nachhaltige Produktion, Verwendung sowie die Wirkung von gärtnerischen Kulturen unter städtischen Bedingungen verstanden. “ (Ulrichs, 2003) Damit ist der Urbane Gartenbau gegenüber dem klassischen Produktionsgartenbau durch die Verwendung und die Wirkung gärtnerischer Kulturen erweitert. In der Region Berlin-Brandenburg hat der Urbane Gartenbau bereits eine lange Tradition. Gärtner, Landschaftsarchitekten, Städteplaner und Ökologen sorgen dafür, dass auch unsere urbane Umgebung durch den Einsatz von Pflanzen lebenswert wird. Dabei werden auch aus ökonomischer Sicht hohe Werte umgesetzt. So wird alleine der Wert der rund 400.000 Berliner Straßenbäume mit über einer Milliarde Euro beziffert. An der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin wurde an der Landwirtschaftlich-Gärtnerischen Fakultät im Institut für Gartenbauwissenschaften im Januar 2003 die erste Professur für Urbanen Gartenbau in Deutschland berufen.

En fonction de l'organisation, du profil des exploitants, on l'appelle également jardin communautaire, jardin familial, ou jardin ouvrier. Suivant le lieu d'implantation des cultures nous parlerons de jardin sur terrasse, de jardin suspendu, de mur vivant, de toit végétalisé (on dit aussi toiture végétale). La dimension de certains jardins en ville, rappelle l'art floral japonais, on peut parler de micro-jardinage, pratiqué par de vrais passionnés. Ils utilisent le moindre espace de terre.
