The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) in Harare, is the oldest and largest university in Zimbabwe. It was founded through a special relationship with the University of London and it opened its doors to its first students in 1952. The university has ten faculties offering a wide variety of degree programmes and many specialist research centres and institutes. The university is accredited through the National Council for Higher Education, under the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education.

Das University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland war seit 1956 in besonderer Weise mit der Universität London assoziiert, der medizinische Unterricht, der 1963 begann, mit der University of Birmingham. Nach der Auflösung der Föderation von Rhodesien und Njassaland 1963 und der einseitigen Unabhängigkeitserklärung Rhodesiens durch die weiße Minderheitsregierung 1965 behielt die Hochschule ihre Autonomie und blieb für alle Bevölkerungsteile offen. 1970-1971 wurden die Assoziationen mit den Universitäten London und Birmingham aufgelöst und die Hochschule erlangte Selbständigkeit als University of Rhodesia.
