In de jaren '70 was de universiteit opgedeeld in drie instituten: Université de Strasbourg I: Université Louis Pasteur Université de Strasbourg II: Université Marc Bloch Université de Strasbourg III: Université Robert Schuman De drie naamgevers van deze instellingen zijn student geweest aan de Universiteit van Straatsburg. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe en Albert Schweitzer hebben eveneens aan deze universiteit gestudeerd. Gedurende het collegejaar 2006-2007 werden plannen bekend gemaakt om deze instituten weer samen te voegen per 2009. Deze plannen stuitten op weerstand onder de studenten. Op 1 januari 2009 werd de nieuwe universiteit opgericht. De volledige integratie dient tegen 2012 afgerond te zijn.
