- Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League, kurz UNIA-ACL oder UNIA, ist eine panafrikanistische Organisation, die am 1. Oktober 1914 in Kingston von Marcus Garvey gegründet wurde. Sie befürwortete in ihrer Blütezeit eine Emigration aller schwarzen Menschen nach Afrika. Die 1914 gegründete und teilweise auf den Lehren Booker T. Washingtons fußende UNIA breitete sich in den Folgejahren im Zuge der Reisen ihres Gründers vor allem in den Vereinigten Staaten und Kanada aus. Zeitweise wurden mehrere Unternehmen von der Organisation betrieben. The Pan-African organization enjoyed its greatest strength in the 1920s, and was influential prior to Garvey's deportation to Jamaica in 1927. After that its prestige and influence declined, but it had a strong influence on African-American history and development. The UNIA was said to be "unquestionably, the most influential anticolonial organization in Jamaica prior to 1938," according to Honor Ford-Smith. The organization was founded to work for the advancement of people of African ancestry around the world. Its motto is "One God! One Aim! One Destiny!" and its slogan is "Africa for the Africans, at home and abroad!" The broad mission of the UNIA-ACL led to the establishment of numerous auxiliary components, among them the African Legion (a paramilitary group), the African Black Cross Nurses, plus businesses such as the Black Star Steamship Line and the Negro Factories Corporation. L' Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) ebbe l'obiettivo del superamento del razzismo, dell'auto sufficienza economica dei popoli di colore e della formazione di una nazione nera in Africa, e si rivolse primariamente al bacino della popolazione di colore degli Stati Uniti. Da quel momento l'associazione, pur rimanendo in vita , non riuscì a raggiungere più un livello significativo , si divise in due componenti separate, ed ebbe tutta la storia dettagliata riportata qui di seguito. In ogni caso nella prima fase la sua influenza raggiunse molti colorati sui due lati dell'Atlantico , e in qualche modo fu una delle cause latenti di origine del movimento Black Nationalism sorto e sviluppatosi dopo la seconda Guerra mondiale.
