  • The United States customary system, or American system and sometimes "English units", of units of measurement is the most commonly used system of measurement in the United States. It is similar but not identical to the obsolescent British Imperial units. The U.S. is the only industrialized nation that does not mainly use the metric system in its commercial and standards activities, although the International System of Units (SI, often referred to as "metric") is universally used in science, and increasingly in medicine, government, and many sectors of industry. The vast majority of U.S. customary units have been defined in terms of the meter and the kilogram since the Mendenhall Order of 1893 (and, in practice, for many years before that date). These definitions were refined in 1959. The U.S. customary units have common roots with the Imperial units which were used in the British Empire and are still used, mainly informally, in Britain and other countries. Many U.S. units are virtually identical to their Imperial counterparts, but the U.S. customary system developed from English units in use before the Imperial system was standardized in 1824, and there are several numerical differences from the Imperial system.

Nejčastější rozdíly v pojmenování jsou: krátká tuna (short ton) pro americkou tunu na rozdíl od dlouhé tuny (long ton) pro anglickou tunu (zřídka se používá i názvů net ton resp. gross ton) u jednotek objemu U.S. barrel a U.S. gallon pro americké jednotky (na rozdíl od imperiálních jednotek, kde se – velice zřídka – používá Imp. barrel a Imp. gallon) Přestože jsou v USA zjevné snahy převést měrný systém na metrické jednotky SI, nebylo dosud dosaženo velkých výsledků. Jak průmysl tak i obchod užívají převážně starého amerického systému, který stojí v popředí i ve veřejných školách. Pouze ve vědeckých pracích jsou preferovány metrické jednotky.

Entrambi i sistemi derivano dalla evoluzione delle misure anticamente utilizzate e riconducibili ai Romani e agli Anglo-Sassoni. Con Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act del 1988, il Governo degli Stati Uniti ha definito il Sistema Internazionale "the preferred system of weights and measures for U.S. trade and commerce" (il sistema preferibile di pesi e misure per il commercio e gli scambi americani). La legislazione sancisce che la responsabilità di assistere l'industria e specialmente le piccole società mentre volontariamente si convertono al sistema metrico di misura, spetta al Governo Federale. Questo processo legislativo e di conversione viene chiamato metrificazione, e negli USA questo appare particolarmente evidente sulle etichette dei prodotti alimentari, dove le misure del Sistema Internazionale sono sempre più frequenti accanto alle tradizionali misure del sistema consuetudinario statunitense.
