Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives elected a new floor leader, the number two job in their leadership, on February 2 2006 following the January 7 2006 resignation of Tom DeLay. The winner, John Boehner, as a result became House Majority Leader as the Republicans hold the majority of seats in the House. DeLay had previously stood down from the post with Roy Blunt, the House Majority Whip, acting for him on an interim basis due to an indictment on money laundering charges.
