The United Nations Humanitarian Air Services (UNHAS) are a service operated by the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide United Nations and other humanitarian organizations with safe and reliable air transport during emergencies. The UN General Assembly has assigned WFP to provide all passenger air support service to all UN humanitarian agencies. In 2004, the service provided air support to 14 different UN operations in 13 countries. It had 102 aircraft on contract.

In 2004, the service provided air support to 14 different UN operations in 13 countries. It had 102 aircraft on contract. Until February 2006, UNHAS additionally operated a dedicated Ilyushin Il-76 for strategic airlifts from at the UNHRD base in Brindisi, Italy. At the time, that aircraft was the only IL76 accepted into civilian airports in Europe, having been granted an exception to noise regulations. On 1 November 2006, a new UNHAS service was started in the Central African Republic, under the leadership of then World Food Programme director Jean-Charles Dei and his deputy Dominique Ferretti. The arrival of UNHAS in the country, badly needed amidst a complex humanitarian emergency in a country without any scheduled air services, was also made possible also thanks to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and its local head Souleymane Beye, who mobilized funds from the Central Emergency Response Fund to kick off the operation. The UNHAS has aircraft based in Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya with flights to many cities in Somalia, such as K50 Airport in Mogadishu or Hargeisa International Airport in Hargeisa.

Sie steht unter der Verwaltung des Nebenorgans Welternährungsprogramm der Vereinten Nationen (WFP). Hauptsitz der Gesellschaft ist in Rom (Italien). Außenstellen (Regional Safety Offices, RASO) gibt es in Nairobi (Kenia), Johannesburg (Südafrika) und Islamabad (Pakistan). Die Fluggesellschaft wurde zunächst 2001 für humanitäre Zwecke eingerichtet, jedoch darf jedes Organ der Vereinten Nationen die Dienste nutzen. Sie wird insbesondere für Personentransporte verwendet. Hauptzweck ist jedoch die Versorgung der notleidenden Bevölkerung weltweit, etwa bei Naturkatastrophen. Die fast ausschließlich geleasten Flugzeuge und Hubschrauber sind komplett weiß (Frieden) lackiert und tragen den Schriftzug UN bzw. United Nations. Des Weiteren wird die Flagge der Vereinten Nationen geführt. UNHAS arbeitet eng mit dem United Nations Joint Logistics Center zusammen. Am Flughafen Brindisi (Süditalien), dem United Nations UN Humanitarian Rapid Response Base befinden sich zwei Einrichtungen der UN Das United Nations Logistic Base (UNLB) und das United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD). Dies wird oft angeflogen, um die Hilfsgüter aufzunehmen. Hier war auch bis 2006 eine Iljuschin Il-76 des UNHAS stationiert. Brindisi gilt daher als die technische Basis der UNHAS.
