Fondé en 1935 par la fusion du Parti conservateur du Québec et de l'Action libérale nationale, l'Union nationale a été un parti nationaliste, conservateur, mettant en valeur l'aspect traditionnel, rural, catholique et francophone du Québec. Les membres de ce parti étaient appelés « unionistes ». Plus tard, leurs adversaires les surnommèrent les « vieux Bleus ». L'Union nationale était très nationaliste et très autonomiste. On doit notamment à Maurice Duplessis l'adoption du fleurdelysé comme drapeau national du Québec en 1948. En comparaison, l'unifolié ne devint le drapeau national canadien qu'en février 1965. Il dota également le Québec de sa propre structure fiscale avec son propre impôt, tenant tête à Ottawa qui souhaitait que le Québec signe les accords fiscaux de 1947, lesquels, faisant écho aux recommandations du rapport de la Commission Rowell-Sirois, octroyaient au fédéral la totalité du prélèvement des impôts particuliers en territoire canadien. Malgré sa nature nationaliste, prônant l'autonomie des provinces, l'Union nationale est restée un parti fédéraliste. Bien que certains de ses chefs envisagèrent l'idée de la souveraineté du Québec, aucun n'a pu, ou n'a voulu, se rendre jusqu'au bout de cette démarche. Au niveau économique, ce parti était contre l'intervention de l'État et favorisait l'investissement étranger afin de développer les régions grâce à l'exploitation des ressources naturelles du Québec. Ce parti a eu des députés à l'Assemblée législative du Québec, puis à l'Assemblée nationale du Québec, de 1935 à 1973, puis de 1974 à 1981.
