- Underground hip hop is an umbrella term for hip hop music outside the general commercial canon. The term is almost exclusively associated with independent artists, signed to small independent labels or no label at all. Underground hip hop is often characterized by having more socially conscious, positive, or anti-commercial lyrics than the mainstream; however, there is no unifying or universal theme. Many artists produce music that celebrate the fundamental elements or pillars of hip hop culture: graffiti, b-boying, turntablism, and MCing. "The Underground" can also refer to the community of musicians, fans and others that support non-commercial, or independent music.
- Indie hip hop o Indy hip hop (abreviación del término inglés independent hip hop) y conocido en Estados Unidos como Underground hip hop es un estilo de música rap surgido de la escena underground. El término rap underground puede referirse al estilo de música descrito como indie hip hop (el cual según sus propios artistas se relaciona con sello independientes) o bien puede describirse como rap alternativo (el cual se define como estilo musical que se diferencia del rap más común como por ejemplo el Gangsta rap. ) Puesto que el término “Indie hip hop” hace referencia, más que al estilo musical en si, a los artistas que producen este tipo de música, no se trata de un género concreto sino que cubre una amplio abanico de variedades de rap que poseen unas características propias. Del mismo modo que los artistas de indie rock, los artistas de indie hip hop dan una gran importancia al hecho de tener completo control sobre su música y sobre sus carreras. Acostumbran a producir sus discos a través de discográficas independientes (a veces puede incluso tratarse de sus propias discográficas) y su promoción depende de los conciertos, el boca-oreja, y de las cadenas de radio independientes. De todos modos, algunos de los artistas más populares del indie hip hop terminan emigrando a las principales discográficas gracias al éxito cosechado en su etapa independiente. Entre algunas de las sellos(discográficas) independientes se encuentran Babygrande Records, Definitive Jux, Nature Sounds, Rawkus Records y Quannum Projects. Entre los artistas de indie hip hop más importantes se encuentran 7L & Esoteric, Blackalicious, Bronze Nazareth, Chief Kamachi, Gym Class Heroes, Lord Jamar,Mr. Lif, Jedi Mind Tricks, Outerspace, The Perceptionists, The Procussions, The Society of Invisibles, Termanology, Black Milk, y los artistas de Boot Camp Clik. Danger Mouse es uno de los artistas que, a pesar de comenzar a través del indie hip hop, recientemente ha firmado un contrato con la conocida discográfica Parlophone.
- Underground hip hop, detto anche underground rap o undie, è un termine generico che raccoglie tutti gli artisti hip hop e rap fuori dai classici canoni commerciali. Le etichette hip hop indipendenti sono le principali fonti di supporto per gli artisti di questo genere ma molta parte è rappresentata da coloro che realizzano il proprio materiale grazie ad autoproduzioni o tramite proprie personali microetichette. Questo hip hop non commercializzato è spesso composto da artisti che alternano la musica ad altri elementi della cultura hip hop come il writing, il breaking, il freestyle ed il beatboxing.
- Yeraltı hiphop, ticari amaç olmadan yapılan hiphop kültürüyle alakalı her şey için kullanılan terimdir. Terim özellikle, küçük bağımsız şirketlere çalışan veya hiçbir şirkete bağlı olmayan rap müzik sanatçılarıyla özdeşleşmiştir. Türkiye'de kendi çabalarıyla şarkılarını yapan ve kaydeden yeraltı rapçileri, bunları kendi sitelerinde veya forumlarda yayınlarlar.
