Käytännössä termiä epäkonferenssi käytetään kuitenkin monenkirjavasta joukosta tapahtumia, jotka jollain tavalla eroavat perinteisistä konferensseista. Epäkonferensseja on suomessa järjestetty viime vuosina erityisesti erilaisten web 2.0 -tapahtumien yhteydessä, joko perinteisten konferenssien ohessa tai aivan omina tapahtuminaan.

Il processo della non conferenza è simile a quello dell'Open Space Technology, in ogni caso è presente da più di vent'anni in altri contesti. Ci sono anche paralleli con la fandom della science fiction dove gli incontri, con poca struttura e senza concentrazione sui relatori o ospiti speciali, vengono denominati Relaxacon. La Open Space Technology è una maniera coinvolgente e in rapida espansione di organizzare eventi e conferenze. I partecipanti possono postare su di un apposito wiki prima dell'evento sulla loro intenzione di presentare un argomento o segnalare un argomento sul quale vogliono che qualcuno presenti. Il wiki può anche essere usato per condividere informazioni sui partecipanti per facilitare il Networking e il Car pooling. Il termine non conferenza viene applicato ad una varietà di incontri che per loro natura evitano uno o più aspetti delle conferenze tradizionali (come la presentazione non interattiva di slide) che possono essere fruiti dai partecipanti anche online, e pongono invece l'accento sull'aspetto partecipativo ed umano offerto dall'incontro fisico tra persone interessate ad uno stesso tema.
