Although UUCP was originally developed on and is most closely associated with Unix, UUCP implementations exist for several other operating systems, including Microsoft's MS-DOS, Digital's VAX/VMS, Commodore's AmigaOS, and Mac OS.

Indem UUCP-Knoten Dateien an andere UUCP-Knoten weiterleiten, können auch – ähnlich wie bei einem Mailboxnetz – Rechner erreicht werden, zu denen keine direkte Verbindung aufgebaut wird. Über UUCP kann auch E-Mail übertragen werden. Außerdem entstand das Usenet zunächst auf Basis von UUCP. Mit der steigenden Popularität des Internet Ende der 1990er verlor das UUCP-Protokoll immer mehr an Bedeutung. Heute wird es noch vereinzelt zur Anbindung von Rechnern, die keine direkte Verbindung zum Internet haben, verwendet. Das Format von E-Mails bei der Übertragung über das UUCP-Protokoll ist in RFC 976 beschrieben. Das Protokoll selbst ist nicht Gegenstand eines RFC. Bezeichnend für UUCP war die relative Adressierung von Rechnern, die rein optisch der im Internet heute üblichen ähnelte, allerdings im Regelfall als Pfadangabe hin zum Zielrechner angegeben werden musste, also inklusive aller Zwischenknoten. Diese wurden dabei durch Ausrufungszeichen (engl. slang bang) voneinander getrennt, weshalb dies auch als Bang Path oder Bang-Adressierung bezeichnet wurde. Beispiel: ersterknoten!secondnode!thirdnode!user . Diese Form der Adressierung war anfällig und langwierig. Dies änderte sich erst mit der allgemeinen Verfügbarkeit von DNS durch Internet-Verbindung, obwohl die Bang-Adressierung auch im Internet im Prinzip noch funktioniert.

Com isto, os custos são reduzidos para um nível razoável, já que é gasto apenas o tempo necessário para transmitir os arquivos. A NASA utiliza um sistema semelhante (um pouco mais avançado naturalmente) nas suas sondas, já que a enorme distância torna as transferências de dados muito lentas e instáveis. Além disso, a latência de uma sonda na órbita de Marte por exemplo é de quase uma hora.
