- USS Permit (SSN-594) became the lead ship of her class of submarines when the former lead ship, Thresher (SSN-593) was lost. She was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the permit, a game fish found in waters from North Carolina to Brazil. The contract to build her was awarded to Mare Island Naval Shipyard on 27 January 1958, and her keel was laid down on 1 May 1959. She was launched on 1 July 1961, sponsored by Mrs. John A. McCone, and commissioned on 29 May 1962. (en)

- USS Permit (SSN-594) – amerykański myśliwski okręt podwodny z napędem atomowym typu Permit. Zbudowany w strukturze dwukadłubowej, z kadłubem sztywnym ze stali HY-80. Dzięki użyciu tej stali oraz odpowiedniej konstrukcji, zdolny był do operowania na dużej głębokości, z zanurzeniem testowym wynoszącym 400 metrów oraz maksymalnym 600 metrów. Uzbrojony był w torpedy Mk.48, pociski rakietowe Subroc z głowica nuklearną lub zamiennie miny oraz Mk.60 Captor. USS "Permit" był drugą w kolejności wybudowaną jednostką tego typu, jednakże z uwagi na katastrofę USS "Thresher" (SSN-593), zmieniono nazwę całego typu na Permit. (pl)
