- The Turul is the most important bird in the origin myth of the Magyars. It is a divine messenger, and perches on top of the tree of life along with the other spirits of unborn children in the form of birds. The Turul became a symbol of power, strength, and nobility, and it is still used today on the coat of arms of the Hungarian Army and the Office of National Security. The most common motifs of the ninth and the early tenth centuries -the griffin, wolf and hind- seldom figure in later Hungarian iconography and heraldic symbolism, however the Hawk or Turul which in shamanistic lore rested upon the tree of life connecting the earth with the netherworld and the skies preserved for longer as a device belonging to the ruling house. The Turul is probably based on a large falcon, and the origin of the word is most likely Turkic: togrıl or turgul means a medium to large bird of prey of the family Accipitridae, Goshawk or Red Kite. In Hungarian the word sólyom means falcon, and there are three ancient words describing different kinds of falcons: kerecsen, zongor [Turkish Sungur = Gyrfalcon] (which survives in the male name Zsombor) and turul.

Cuando el Príncipe húngaro Ügyek y su esposa Emese esperanban un hijo, sería el Turul quien se le aparecería en sueños a Emese y le auguraría gran nobleza y éxito a su hijo, como nuevo líder de los húngaros. Por ésto, el hijo de Emese sería conocido como Álmos . Álmos conduciría a los húngaros hacia Europa oriental, y su hijo Árpad se convertiría en el Gran Príncipe húngaro fundador de la dinastía de los Árpádes, a la cual perteneció San Esteban I de Hungría.

Una seconda volta è un Turul ad apparire in sogno ai capi delle 7 tribù ungheresi. In questo caso i Turul mettono in fuga le aquile che stanno attaccando i cavalli delle tribù. Il significato attribuito ai sogni fu che era necessario migrare verso nuove terre. Una volta in movimento, i Turul indicarono loro la strada, guidandoli verso la Pannonia che sarebbe divenuta la culla dell'Ungheria. Tra le numerose statue di Turul presenti sul territorio ungherese la più imponente è visibile presso Tatabánya. Eretta nel 1907, sembra che sia la più grande statua raffigurante un volatile in Europa: l'apertura alare della statua è di oltre 15 metri.
