- In the United Kingdom, Triple Award Science is a short-hand for separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Triple Science is a combination of three GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics. It will normally be a course of study for students in Years 10 and 11. Triple Science provides the fullest coverage of these subjects at Key Stage 4-including all the compulsory programme of study for science. It is offered by the four main awarding bodies- AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and WJEC, and the Northern Ireland board NICCEA. The Government introduced a non-statutory entitlement to enable all young people who achieve a level 6 or above at Key stage 3 and who would benefit, to study Triple Science GCSEs from September 2008. For Specialist colleges: All young people with Level 6 in Science at Key Stage 3 must be offered the opportunity to study Triple Science GCSEs • from September 2008 for Science Colleges • from September 2009 for Engineering and Technology colleges • From September 2010 for Maths and Computing colleges or at the latest by the next re-designation. An increase in the number of students studying Triple Science GCSEs has been identified as one way to encourage more young people to take science subjects at A-level and to continue into science in Higher Education. 2008 showed a resurgence in the popularity of Triple Science with an increase of around 30% in the number of students taking GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics. The Triple Science Support Programme www. triplescience. org. uk, delivered by the Learning and Skills Network (LSN), helps schools prepare and implement Triple Science GCSEs. The programme offers: • Tailored continuing professional development for science teachers • Access to local networks and collaborative partnerships • Publications to support the delivery of triple GCSEs including three subject specific publications, curriculum planning, raising attainment, collaborative approaches and 17 Quick Guides covering new or difficult areas of triple science. www. triplescience. org. uk/pubs • An online learning community of science teachers http://community. triplescience. org. uk/ . It was first used in Tasker Milward school in 2007.
