The high, granitic peaks of the Eastern half of the wilderness area are known as the Trinity Alps. The Wilderness contains over 500 miles (800 km) of hiking trails, including 17 miles (27 km) of the Pacific Crest Trail. Many of the trails take several days to complete. The area also includes a great deal of small lakes. While some of the high lakes of the Alps themselves are popular, most of the area is rarely seen. Most of the trails are in poor condition and hard to follow, so skills with map and compass are essential. Black bears are common in the wilderness, so use a bear bag or bear canister.
