Sie entstand aus der Fusion der Staatlichen Ingenieurschule für das Bau- und Maschinenwesen Trier und der Werkkunstschule Trier. 1971 wurde sie eine Abteilung der damaligen Fachhochschule Rheinland-Pfalz. Seit 1996 ist sie eine eigenständige Fachhochschule. 1994 wurde der Standort Birkenfeld eröffnet. 1996 kam der Standort Idar-Oberstein hinzu.
