The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is an international assessment of the mathematics and science knowledge of fourth- and eighth-grade students around the world. TIMSS was developed by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) to allow participating nations to compare students' educational achievement across borders. The IEA also conducts the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS).

TIMSS war ursprünglich ein Akronym für Third International Mathematics and Science Study (Dritte Internationale Mathematik- und Naturwissenschaftsstudie), der 1999er-Durchgang wurde als TIMSS-R fortgeführt (R für Repeat); seit TIMSS 2003 steht das Akronym für Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study. Vorgänger-Studien waren FIMS (First International Mathematics Study, 1964, 12 Länder) und SIMS (Second International Mathematics Study, 1980-82, 20 Länder, ohne deutsche Beteiligung) sowie FISS und SISS (First and Second International Science Study, 1968-1972 und 1982-1986, SISS ohne deutsche Beteiligung). Deutschland, Österreich und die Schweiz beteiligten sich an TIMSS 1995. Zum zweiten Mal beteiligten sich Deutschland und Österreich an TIMSS 2007.

Sinds 1995 wordt wereldwijd elke vier jaar de kennis van leerlingen in de exacte vakken gemeten met een internationale TIMSS-toets voor het basisonderwijs en/of het voortgezet onderwijs. De dataverzameling van het eerste TIMSS-onderzoek vond plaats aan het einde van het schooljaar 1994/1995 en richtte zich op drie groepen leerlingen. Voor Nederland waren dit groep 5 en 6 van het basisonderwijs, leerjaar 1 en 2 van het voortgezet onderwijs en het laatste jaar van het voortgezet onderwijs. De twee vervolgstudies, TIMSS-1999 en TIMSS-2003, hadden betrekking op groep 6 van het basisonderwijs en/of het tweede leerjaar van het voortgezet onderwijs.

TIMSS ble utviklet av International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) for at medlemslandene skulle kunne sammenlikne elevenens kunnskapsnivåer på tvers av landegrenser. Den første TIMSS-undersøkelsen ble gjennomført i 1995, og deretter med fire års mellomrom. I 1995 deltok 41 land i studien, i 2007 hadde antallet økt til ca. 60. TIMSS består av en vurdering av elevenes kunnskaper i matematikk og kunnskap, i tillegg til spørreskjemaer for elever, lærere og skolene. Testen omfatter emner elevene skal ha hatt på nivåene opptil 4. og 8. årstrinn. For å kunne vurdere elevenes kunnskaper har oppgavene en rekke ulike vanskelighetsgrader. Elevenes spørreskjemaer er utformet for å samle inn informasjon om studentenes bakgrunn og holdninger til skolegang og læring, informasjon om deres erfaringer fra klasserommet m.m. Lærerne og skolene blir blant annet spurt om tilretteleggingen av undervisningen, omfanget av undervisningen i matematikk og naturfag, skolepolitikk, lærernes bakgrunn og forberedelser. I Norge er det Institutt for lærerutdanning og skoleutvikling ved Universitetet i Oslo som står for gjennomføringen av TIMSS-undersøkelsene.
