Some suggested that the album could be a satirical message that Young was trying to send about the direction music was headed in the future. A vocoder features prominently in five of the nine tracks. While the album was poorly received, some critics point out that the melodies are strong and that the album involves Young addressing new musical movements, as he did previously on Rust Never Sleeps and later with the grunge movement. Neil Young found that when using a vocoder when communicating to his son (who was born with cerebral palsy), he was able to elicit a better response. The emotional power of this experiment shows in the lyrics, particularly in the track "Transformer Man" with the lines "So many things still left to do / But we haven't made it yet. " Portions of several tracks appeared in Young's 1982 feature length comedy film Human Highway. One song, "If You Got Love," appeared on the LP's printed track listing, but was not included on the album in a last minute change of mind. Trivia: Neil would affectionately refer to the vocoder as "Sylvia" due to the feminine voice it would emit. Originally released as an LP, the album was re-issued in 1998 on CD, although not in the US.

Infatti con la tecnologia e la voce filtrata tentava di comunicare con il figlio cerebroleso (autistico) costretto su una sedia a rotelle che si muoveva con un telecomando (è lui il protagonista della commovente "Transformer Man"). Inoltre aveva anche l'altro figlio e la moglie malati, sicuramente uno dei vari motivi per cui in quegli anni i suoi album erano così fuori fuoco e pieni di cambiamenti di genere musicale. Le tematiche dell'album sono quelle di un mondo invaso ed oppresso dalle nuove tecnologie (stavano comparendo sul mercato i primi Pc). "Mr Soul" è una nuova curiosa versione del suo classico del 1967 con i Buffalo Springfield. Nonostante tutto molti critici sono concordi che le melodie sono ben costruite, come se si volesse cercare un "anima" nascosta dietro tutte quelle macchine. Non tutte le tracce però sono "robotiche", infatti "Little Thing Called Love", "Hold on to Your Love" e "Like an Inca" sono nello stile più tradizionale di Young, perché scarti di un album mai realizzato chiamato "Island in the Sun".
