It split off from a group of companies managed by Marc Rich in 1993. Trafigura has been named or involved in several scandals, especially in Africa, since its creation.

(Cette grâce constitue le dernier acte public du président Clinton, quelques heures avant son départ en 2001). En raison d’opinions divergentes sur la manière dont Marc Rich gérait la société, Claude Dauphin et Eric de Turckheim ont quitté Glencore pour créer Trafigura en 1993. La Fondation Trafigura a été créée en 2007. Les employés sont au cœur de cette Fondation dont le but est d’apporter un soutien financier aux initiatives des communautés locales dans lesquelles Trafigura est implantée. Parmi quelques exemples, on peut noter que Trafigura a fait une donation de 1 125 millions de dollars au New Orleans Center For Creative Art Institute aux Etats-Unis suite à l’ouragan Katarina.
