dbpprop:abstract
  • The Toyota Camry (ACV40) and GSV40 are the seventh generation versions of the Toyota Camry, a mid-size car produced by Toyota. The seventh generation Camry was introduced at the 2006 North American International Auto Show alongside a hybrid version and went on sale in March 2006 as a 2007 model. Toyota normally begins selling the Camry in September but cut the previous model's lifespan to 4.5 years instead of 5 years. The 2007 Camry was redesigned and featured a 2-inch longer wheelbase. Overall length and passenger volume remained equal to the predecessor, while trunk space decreased by about 1.5 cu-ft. For model year 2007 on Japanese models only, G-BOOK, a subscription telematics service, is offered as an option. Power came from a choice of four and six-cylinder engines. The 2.4 L 2AZ-FE I4 (ACV40) engine was carried over from the past generation and produced 158 horsepower (118 kW) and 161 ft·lbf. It came with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic. The 3.5 L 2GR-FE V6 (GSV40) in contrast came with a new six-speed automatic and produced 268 horsepower (200 kW) and 248 ft·lbf. Both engines are ULEV-II compliant, in some markets the 4-cylinder engines is PZEV rated to confirm with CARB laws. Styling-wise the Camry takes a sleeker shape with the coefficient of drag figure remaining at 0.28 Cd for the non-hybrid model and 0.27 Cd for the hybrid. For more responsive handling Toyota offers the SE Camry. The SE's chassis offers 15%-higher spring rates, special dampers/shocks, a stiffer front anti-roll bar, stiffer bushings on the rear suspension, and 17 inch summer tires. To create a more rigid structure an underfloor brace, a V-brace behind the rear seat (prevents rear seat fold-down) and thicker body-side brackets are added. For increased handling performance TRD offers stiffer lowering springs. The 2010 updated model also has an optional limited-slip differential and TRD-tuned exhaust system. This SE has been considered a thoroughly sportier drive than the standard Camry models, which was not so much the case for the previous 2002-2006 Camry SE models. Distinguishing characteristics from the SE include exclusive 5-spoke alloy wheels, a blackout grille, light blue trimmed Optitron illumination for the gauges, exclusive Dark Charcoal sport fabric or leather seats, and a three-spoke steering wheel that shares the design with the Toyota Camry Solara. Competing "sporty family sedans" in the North American market include the Dodge Avenger R/T, Ford Fusion Sport V-6, Mazda 6s/6i Grand Touring, Mitsubishi Galant Ralliart, and Pontiac G6 GXP. Only Mazda offers a sporty model to compete with the Camry SE four-cylinder. Sales in the United States, the primary market for the Camry, significantly increased in the year following release. Quarterly sales totaled a record 46,630 vehicles for second quarter of the American 2007 model year. In April 2007, Toyota began producing additional Camry models at Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana. In a Cars. com American-Made Index study, the Camry was ranked highest, all models sold in the US are assembled in there. Consumer Reports 2007 Annual Car Reliability Survey gave the V6 version of the Camry a "below average" rating, due to transmission issues thus removing the V6 Camry from Consumer Reports' "Recommended" list. This rating does not apply to the four cylinder and hybrid versions, which continued to be recommended. However, these problems have been corrected, and the V6 version has improved to "average". At the 2008 LA Auto Show, Toyota unveiled its CNG (compressed natural gas) powered hybrid. While this vehicle is a concept, Toyota had sold a 4 cylinder CNG Camry to California fleet customers previously in 1999.
