Having released ten studio albums over a career spanning more than two decades, he is best known as an instrumental solo guitarist; although he has worked with many different bands and musicians in the form of guest appearances and collaborations.

Il a une formation de base au piano et au violon classiques, ce n'est que plus tard qu'il découvrit la guitare, pour ensuite en devenir un de ses virtuoses. Il se fait connaître du grand public en 1986 avec un album instrumental, sur le label Shrapnel Records du producteur Mike Varney, qui produisit aussi, quelques années auparavant, les premiers disques de Marty Friedman et Yngwie Malmsteen, pionniers du metal dit néo-classique. Régulièrement, il participe aux tournées de Steve Vai, au clavier ou à la guitare. Depuis le 2 mars 2007, il est également aux côtés de Michel Polnareff dans le cadre de sa grande tournée. Il participe pleinement à ce moment exceptionnel. On notera quelques solo d'anthologie comme dans le "Bal des Laze" où son jeu apporte une touche révolutionnaire à la géniale composition de Polnareff.

Recentemente si è unito a Billy Sheehan (con il quale aveva già collaborato nella Steve Vai band) e a Virgil Donati per dar vita al progetto Devil's Slingshot, pubblicando l'album Clinophobia il 22 ottobre 2007, il quale verrà seguito da un tour europeo tra i mesi di ottobre e novembre.
